is cocaine at the scene, police said. [AP]

LOS ANGELES - Lindsay Lohan won't be attending Sunday's MTV Movie Awards,
her publicist confirmed Friday.

The actress, who checked into rehab earlier this week, was one of several
celebrity presenters scheduled for the show, which is being broadcast
live from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City. Her publicist,
Leslie Sloane Zelnik, said in a brief e-mail that she wouldn't be there.

Those still scheduled to present awards include Victoria Beckham, Cameron
Diaz, Robin Williams, Jessica Biel, Mandy Moore, Bruce Willis and several
others.

Lohan checked into rehab after a wild Memorial Day weekend during which
she crashed her Mercedes Benz into a curb, was arrested for suspicion of
driving under the influence and was photographed slumped in the passenger
seat of a friend's car.

Hugh Grant desperate for Cameron Diaz and Meg Ryan

Washington - British heart-throb Hugh Grant desperately wants to work
with Cameron Diaz and Meg Ryan, for they are among the few leading ladies
he hasn't yet shared screen space with.

The actor, who has starred opposite some of Hollywood's biggest female
stars like Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock and Drew Barrymore, insists that
there are still a few very talented actresses that he would love to work
with.

"I sometimes think I've worked with all the film actresses there are out
there, but there are still a couple whom I'd like to work with if I
could," Contactmusic quoted him, as saying.

"I've always loved Meg Ryan. And I very much admire Cameron Diaz. I'd
love to work with either of them," he added.

Grant, who has hits like 'Notting Hill', 'Four Weddings and a Funeral',
'Nine Months' and 'Love Actually' under his belt, was most recently seen
on the big screen opposite Drew Barrymore in the romantic comedy 'Music
and Lyrics'.

Palace in Cannes, southern France. [AFP]

The 60th Cannes film festival, which wrapped up Sunday, awarded a Palme
d'Or for lifetime achievement to veteran US actress and activist Jane
Fonda over the weekend.

The exceptional Golden Palm prize, awarded by festival chief Gilles
Jacob, had only been awarded three times before since 1946, to French
directors Alain Resnais and Gerard Oury and the French actress Jeanne
Moreau.

Jacob presented the surprise honour at a dinner after a screening of
Sidney Lumet's classic "12 Angry Men" as a tribute to her late father
Henry, who died in 1982.

"I never imagined that the Cannes film festival would honour a person who
was spied on and tracked by the FBI, a person who has a 20,000-page
file," Jacob noted with a touch of irony, referring to her campaign
against the Vietnam war, and later the US invasion of Iraq.

"You are a woman who fights and wins."

A visibly moved Fonda, 69, said she was "overwhelmed" by the special
prize.

"I have the feeling my father is with me tonight. The whole Fonda family
thanks you," she said in French.

"He loved progressive films and those films taught me important things:
justice, democracy.... I feel inspired by and proud of the heritage he
left us."

The two-time Oscar winner was accompanied at the dinner by her daughter
by Roger Vadim, Vanessa.

US director Robert Rodriguez said during the festival that he has signed
on to remake Fonda's iconic cult hit "Barbarella."

Chinese Mandarin - Johnny Depp: Captain Jack Sparrow may be back

ENTERTAINMENT / Movies

Johnny Depp: Captain Jack Sparrow may be back

(AP)
Updated: 2007-05-23 15:16

TOKYO - Three journeys as Captain Jack Sparrow in the "Pirates of the
Caribbean" may not be enough to quench the thirst of actor Johnny Depp.

Before the Tokyo premiere Wednesday of the series' third installment,
Depp said he would consider taking the oddball character out for one more
spin.

"It's been a great experience," Depp said. "Trying to discover who
Captain Jack was, getting slapped around by the Disney people it was
all fun."

"Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" was to premiere Wednesday and
open in theaters across the United States and elsewhere on May 24.

Depp stars as the eclectic and mascara-fancying pirate Captain Jack
Sparrow, who is rescued at the beginning of the movie from Davy Jones'
Locker, where he wound up last year at the end of "Dead Man's Chest," to
begin a journey that takes the Black Pearl and its crew to, well, the end
of the world.

It's not an easy story to follow.

Will Turner ( Orlando Bloom), Elizabeth Swann ( Keira Knightley) and
Captain Barbossa ( Geoffrey Rush) must rescue Jack and round up the Nine
Lords of the Brethren Court to stop the Machiavellian Lord Cutler Beckett
(Tom Hollander), head of the East India Co., from ridding the world of
pirates.

Will also wants to free his father, Bootstrap Bill ( Stellan Skarsgard,
still covered in barnacles), from the ghost ship the Flying Dutchman,
which Beckett controls. At the same time, Davy Jones ( Bill Nighy, still
covered in tentacles) wants to get his heart back, which is trapped
inside a chest, which Beckett's goons control. And Will and Elizabeth
must win each other's hearts back after various romantic stops and starts.

The film completes what had originally been intended as a trilogy of
movies based on the ride by the same name at Disneyland.

Depp, who was nominated for an Oscar for his quirky portrayal of Captain
Jack, said the pirates may rise again.

"There was always that potential that each of us would have to say
goodbye to the character," Depp said. "But if it is over, which one never
knows, Captain Jack will always be with me."

Even so, producer Jerry Bruckheimer cautioned that no one will be jumping
right back into the waters.

"This is the end for now," he said. "I think everybody is exhausted and
needs some time off. We're all going to take a little break."

Daniel Craig, the latest incarnation of James Bond, is temporarily laying
down his Walther PPK to play a fading Hollywood star in Baillie Walsh's
"Flashbacks of a Fool."

Craig has joined Helen McCrory, Olivia Williams and Emilia Fox in the
film, which details the story of a hedonistic British actor whose
Hollywood career begins to nosedive in his 40s.

"Flashbacks" marks the writing and directing debut for Walsh, whose
resume includes turns behind the camera on music videos.

Once in a Kung Fu Dream

Updated: 2007-05-18 09:34

When the weak fall prey to the strong without uttering a word

And when laws and ethics fail

Who will speak for the abused?

Only fists and feet, answers the kung fu film.

Over the past one hundred years, Chinese film workers have been
cultivating a lyric language of motion that is beyond time and space.

Readers' comments:

Kungfu v.s Yoga, which is more powerful?

Yanjiaren: i like Kung Fu, cos you can combine martial with civil..both
through one art..

xiaojamesxu: it's not the question that which kind of martial arts is
better , it depends on who does them. a piece of paper can be a knife in
the hand of a Kongfu master.believe it or not but it's true.

Have your say at Forum

In the past one hundred years, Chinese kung fu films have taken the world
screen by storm with amazing martial arts, gravity-defying stunts,
picturesque vistas and computer-generated special effects. But there is
something deeper behind, the KUNG FU SPIRIT.

In the fantastic world of Chinese kung fu, masters or heroes are called
"Xia". You probably know about the knights of ancient Europe and samurais
in ancient Japan, like Zorro, Batman and Spiderman -- they are all "Xia"
in the eyes of the Chinese.

With spin-kicks and flying leaps more captivating than any slingshot,
kung fu stars cast in films are without exception the fighter for
justice, who punishes evil-doers and shows great loyalty to his country
and his principles.

Although martial arts may be losing their popularity in modern life, kung
fu films still strike a chord with people who work day to day in the
concrete jungle.

More and more Hollywood big names are cashing in. China's kung fu films
are stylishly bridging time, space, and now, cultures.

Speak Chinese - Georgia Rule

ENTERTAINMENT / New Releases

Georgia Rule

Updated: 2007-04-30 10:53

Rebellious teenager Rachel screams, swears, drinks and is, in a word,
uncontrollable. With her latest car crash, Rachel has broken the final
rule in mom Lilly's San Francisco home. With nowhere else to take the
impulsive and rambunctious girl, Lilly hauls her daughter to the one
place she swore she'd never return--her own mother's Idaho farm.
Matriarch Georgia is not your typical sweet and doting grandmother. She
lives her life by a number of unbreakable rules, demanding anyone who
shares her home do the same--God comes first and hard work comes a very
close second. Now saddled with raising the young woman, it will require
each patient breath she takes to understand Rachel's fury. But as Rachel
succumbs to her summer of misery and shakes up the tiny Mormon town,
Georgia notices something is changing within her granddaughter. Given
structure and responsibilities, Rachel is letting her guard down and
learning compassion, especially for her mother. Her journey will lead all
three women to revelations of buried family secrets and an understanding
that--regardless what happens--the ties that bind can never be broken.

Stay at home to have fun!

(lifestyle.com)
Updated: 2007-05-05 09:26

The Golden Week means more people and more traffic on the streets, so a
good way to relax is to stay at home. You can invite your friends over to
play some games and the following are a few suggestions:

Twister

How close can it be when playing Twister?
There's a Sex and the City episode where Carrie plays Twister with a guy
and the two ended up in bed. Or what about the scene in Friends where
four of them play Twister and Joe is distracted by Phoebe's sexy hip.

Twister is a popular game among young people in North America. In the
game, the players get in close body contact with each other.

Players play on a big plastic sheet that has several rows of coloured
dots. Then a judge spins the dial to see what colour spot they should
touch, and whether it should be their hands or feet. Players who lose
their balance are out of the game. The one who stays on to the end is the
winner.

Playing tips

1 Two to four players are the best.
2 Intimate body contacts are necessary when playing this game. So girls
should dress in pants and shirts.
3 Those who have stiff muscles and tendons had better do warm up
exercises before playing the game you might be stuck in an awkward
pose!

Gostop

Gostop cards.
In the Korean soap opera Full House, Song Hye Kyo wins favor from her
boyfriend's granny by playing Gostop with her. Another television drama
called My Name Is Kim Sam-sun? where Kim Sam-sun plays Gostop against her
rival to win her man

It's a popular poker game in South Korea. There are 48 cards divided into
12 categories. Different cards have different scores. The player who
scores the most wins.

When playing, 21 cards are distributed to three players, 7 for each.
Another 6 cards are set aside as referring cards. The rest are left in
the stack.

The three players reveal their cards one and one. If one has a a card in
the same category as one of the referring cards, then he takes this card
out and gets the scores of both the referring card and his own card. If
he doesn't have a card in the same category as the referring cards, then
he may get rid of any of the cards he is holding , and is also allowed to
take one card from the deposit to see whether this card matches any of
the referring cards. If it does match, he gets the scores of both the
referring card and the card from deposit. If the cards still don't match,
then he loses the opportunity to score in this round. Then it's next
player's turn to reveal his cards. This continues until one of the
players scoring 30 points, then he calls out STOP or GO to decide whether
or not to continue this game.

Playing tips

1 This poker game requires at least three players.
2 The best part about playing Gostop is hearing the sound of the cards
when they fall on each other. So wield your arms and smack your card
heavily upon the previous card in a dramatic fashion.
3 The way to calculate points is rather complicated. So study the scoring
rules carefully before playing.

It's all about fun in Chengdu

Updated: 2007-04-28 09:00

Ancient Chinese poets and scholars have warned against going to Sichuan
in one's youth, as it is easy to lose oneself in the luxuries of the
province.

Chengdu, capital of SW. Sichuan Province, otherwise known as the Heavenly
State, is more likely to call to mind giant pandas and spicy snacks than
a scenic city. Rushing through would be a mistake. Chengdu is a city for
everything but hastiness.

CITYLIFE / Odds & Ends

Solo travel, why not?

(chinaren.com)
Updated: 2007-04-20 09:19

As a single man, how do you spend your holidays? Have you ever thought of
traveling alone? It has many advantages. You don't have to worry about
other people wanting to do what you don't, or worry spending too much or
not enough time on given place. The following is a list places fit for
solo travel. Don't worry, you'll have different experience.

Basha Village, Guizhou Province

Basha Village is a well-preserved Miao ethnic village, which is famous
for its primitiveness. Women there dress the same as what they had
centuries ago, whilemen have long hair, like in Qing Dynasty.

What's more exciting is that Basha is China's last tribe that can legally
carry real guns. So, bachelors, you may also get your hand on real guns
and mimic a wild fight in the forests.

Baiyu County, Sichuan Province

Amazing natural scenery, holy religious events, they're what you'll see
in mountainous Baiyu County. Shanyan Clan, China's last patrilineal clan
lives not far away, where bachelors will experience the full authority of
being a male.

Yangshuo County, Guilin City

Though Yangshuo has been introduced in almost every traveling guide book,
here we still list it because of Xijie, a reconstructed ancient street.
The street is filled with bars, cafes, tiny hostels and craftwork shops.
You'll see backpackers, artists, and hikers from home and abroad. It's
easy for strangers making friends with each other, what you need to do is
join them, have a drink or a dance. Everything is that simple!

Chengdu, Sichuan Province

The capital city of Shichuan Province boasts hot girls, hot dishes, crazy
soccer fans and rock and roll bands, which are enough to attract
bachelors.

Moreover, different from other big cities, Chengdu has its unique
lifestyle, relaxed and leisurely. A typical Chengdu man's life is
described like the following, if he has got 10 yuan at hand, he will find
a seat in a public teahouse and spend 3 yuan for a cup of tea. Then he
spends another 2 yuan having his ears cleaned, and another 1 yuan
cleaning the shoes. He would spend rest of the money on newspapers to
kill the time.

So for a single man who wants to escape from the busy life, Chengdu is a
nice choice.

Daocheng County, Shichuan Province

Daocheng is recommended to those who have just split with their
girlfriends.

Being a Tibetan county located in Shichuan Province, Daocheng County have
grand snow mountains, vast plateau pastures and holy temples. The holy
and calm atmosphere is a good cure for a wounded heart.

Tips for traveling alone:

1, Enjoy being alone. This is very important. If you feel boring at
first, the whole trip will be meaningless. Go exploring, write a travel
journal, treat yourself a good meal do all those things you'll do with
your friends.

2. Talk to people sitting next to you. No matter on a bus, train or
plane, chatting with your "neighbor" is a good way to kill the time since
you're alone. Though you may wish you never asked, at least you won't
feel lonely.

3. Take reading materials with you. If you don't like chatting with
strangers, take something to read also helps you out of loneliness.

4. Stay at backpackers' hotel or hostel. Many solo travelers choose to
stay there. Talk to the people in your room, talk to people eating dinner
with you.

UK turns up heat on Iran over sailors

Updated: 2007-03-29 06:53

Britain turned up the heat on Iran yesterday, releasing evidence it said
showed 15 military personnel captured last week were operating in Iraqi
waters and freezing bilateral contacts until the crisis is resolved.

Iran countered by insisting that British marines and sailors were inside
Iranian waters and said the governments of both countries could settle
the matter through "close cooperation".

Britain's Foreign Office said however that until the detainees were
returned it would halt all official visits between the two countries,
suspend the issue of visas to Iranian officials and suspend support for
events such as trade missions.

"We are now in a new phase of diplomatic activity. We need to focus all
our bilateral efforts during this phase to resolution of this issue,"
British Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett told parliament.

"We will therefore be imposing a freeze on all other official bilateral
business with Iran until this situation is resolved," she said.

Turkey's private CNN Turk television network quoted Iran's Foreign
Minister Manouchehr Mottaki as saying Teheran would release a woman
sailor detained with 14 other British servicemen "today or tomorrow". It
gave no other details.

Britain's Foreign Office said it could not confirm the report.

With the United States also conducting naval exercises in the Gulf, the
rising tension rattled global markets. Although both Washington and
London denied talk that military operations were under way, oil prices
jumped by $5 overnight to more than $68 a barrel before they settled back
at around $64. Gold jumped to a four-week high on safe-haven buying
before prices eased.

The British Defense Ministry said global positioning data showed the
British sailors and marines were 1.7 nautical miles within Iraqi waters
when they were captured by Iranian gunboats near the waterway that
separates Iran and Iraq.

"The boats remained throughout well within Iraqi territorial waters,"
Britain's Deputy Chief of Defense Staff, Vice-Admiral Charles Style, told
a news conference.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair said the detention of the British
sailors was "completely unacceptable, wrong and illegal." The Foreign
Office said the Iranian ambassador, in talks there on Tuesday, was
summoned for a fifth meeting yesterday.

They were unable to confirm comments by Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip
Erdogan, quoted by CNN Turk television as saying that Turkish diplomats
may be allowed to see the captured Britons. Britain has so far been
denied access.

Naomi Campbell begins community service in NYC

Naomi Campbell, center, enters a Department of Sanitation facility,
Monday, March 19, 2007, in New York, to begin community service as
punishment for having hit one of her employees with a telephone. The
36-year-old supermodel was expected to push a broom or mop at the
Manhattan garage to fulfill her sentence for community service for
throwing a cell phone at her maid over a pair of missing jeans.[AP photo]

NEW YORK - Naomi Campbell, wearing black stilettos and slinging dark work
boots over her shoulder, traded the catwalk for community service Monday
at a sanitation garage to start a five-day sentence for assaulting her
maid.

The 36-year-old supermodel arrived at the Manhattan District 3 Garage at
Pier 36 on the Hudson in a black sport utility vehicle. She'll be pushing
a broom or mop at the garage for her guilty plea to misdemeanor assault
for throwing a cell phone at her maid over a pair of missing jeans.

Campbell was met by a garage official who escorted her through the
building's dirty, steel double doors. She also wore chocolate brown
pants, a short fitted coat with a flared bottom, dark sunglasses and a
newsboy-type cap over a short hairdo.

She didn't acknowledge the horde of assembled media.

"Miss Campbell arrived on time to work. She came ready to work," Albert
Durrell, deputy chief of the Department of Sanitation, told reporters at
a briefing outside the facility.

It's the same sanitation depot where former Culture Club frontman Boy
George performed his five-day community service stint in August. He
pleaded guilty for falsely reporting a burglary at his lower Manhattan
apartment. The responding officers found cocaine instead.

Unlike George, who performed his duties outdoors in full view of TV
cameras, Campbell will work inside the garage. She was issued protective
gloves, dust mask and reflective orange vest.

"We have plenty of work for her to do over the next five days," Durrell
said.

Because of her celebrity status, sanitation police officers will be
stationed at each entrance of the facility, Durrell said.

Campbell, who has a reputation for angry outbursts, pleaded guilty in
January for hitting Ana Scolavino in the back of the head with the phone
last March. Scolavino was treated for a head injury.

In exchange for her guilty plea, Campbell was ordered to pay Scolavino's
medical expenses of $363, do five days of community service and attend a
two-day anger-management program.

Rider" during a press conference for the movie in Tokyo, 21 February
2007.[AFP]

Nicolas Cage's comic-book adaptation "Ghost Rider" held onto top spot at
the North American box-office for the second week, according to final
figures released Monday.

The movie, which features Cage as motorcycle-riding vigilante Johnny
Blaze, earned another 20 million dollars in the US and Canada, Los
Angeles-based box office tracker Exhibitor Relations reported.

In second spot was Jim Carrey thriller "The Number 23" about a man who
becomes obsessed by a book that appears to mirror his own life. The film
opened in second place with 14.6 million dollars.

In third was fantasy fable "Bridge to Terabithia," based on the
children's novel about two friends who discover a magical kingdom where
they reign as king and queen. The film brought in 14.2 million dollars
over the weekend.

Offbeat comedy "Reno 911!: Miami," a big-screen version of a US
television show about an oddball gang of Reno police officers, earned
10.3 million.

Eddie Murphy's comedy "Norbit," which many pundits blamed for the
comedian's surprise Oscar defeat in the best supporting actor award --
for "Dreamgirls"-- on Sunday, slipped two spots to fifth with 9.8 million
in ticket sales.

Rounding out the top twelve were: "Music and Lyrics" (7.7 million);
"Breach" (6.0 million); "Tyler Perry's Daddy's Little Girls" (4.8
million); "The Astronaut Farmer" (4.5 million); "Amazing Grace" (4.0
million); "Because I Said So" (2.8 million); and "Night at the Museum"
(2.2 million).

The 12 top movies combined grossed an estimated 100.8 million, up a bare
half percent from last year's take the same weekend.

HSK Exam - Kylie urges fans not to harass ex-boyfriend

Kylie urges fans not to harass ex-boyfriend

(Reuters)
Updated: 2007-02-13 09:10

SYDNEY: Australian pop star Kylie Minogue has urged fans not to harass
her ex-boyfriend French actor Olivier Martinez, saying he deserves better
treatment.

"For someone whom I have enormous love and respect, and communicate with,
it is so grossly unfair: to demonize an honest man," Minogue said in a
statement on her website www.kylie.com.

Minogue and Martinez announced in early February they were ending their
four-year relationship but will remain friends.

At the time tabloid newspapers and magazines ran stories of Martinez's
alleged infidelity with Hollywood actresses Penelope Cruz and Michelle
Rodriguez.

"As for the treatment Olivier has received of late, I can only reiterate
that he simply does not deserve the kind of harassment or vitriol to
which he has been subjected," Minogue said in the statement posted on
Friday.

Minogue praised Martinez for supporting her while she underwent
chemotherapy in his native country France after she was diagnosed with
breast cancer in 2005.

"He didn't hesitate in canceling work and putting projects on hold so he
could be with me. He's the most honorable man I have ever met," she said.

"I would ask of you, my fans, to show your support for both Olli and
myself as a separation is never easy."

Man-made beauty puzzles police

(China Daily)
Updated: 2007-02-01 09:06

The results of a face-lift can seem miraculous, but patients beware
plastic surgery and passports don't always mix.

A woman who was returning home after having a face-lift in South Korea
left immigration officials at Shanghai Pudong International Airport
scratching their heads on Monday as they struggled to match the man-made
beauty before them with the picture in her passport.

A policeman surnamed Liu stopped the woman because of the obvious
difference in her appearance. "Is this really your passport? The woman in
the photo is square-faced, but your face is oval-shaped," he said.

The woman told Liu that she had traveled to South Korea for a surgical
procedure to have her chin built up and her jaw-line reshaped.

Liu then telephoned the woman's employer and asked her boss to send him
copies of the photos appearing in the woman's work permit. As expected,
the squared-face woman in those pictures bore little resemblance to the
woman in the immigration queue.

Liu and his colleagues then contacted the woman's family. After chatting
with members of the woman's family, the police finally accepted that the
woman was who she said she was.

"This sort of thing happened approximately 10 times in the past year,"
Fan Hongxiang, a police officer who works at the airport, told China
Daily.

Fan recalled that on April 26, 2006, police struggled to identify a
Japanese tourist who had lost 35 kilograms and looked nothing like the
photo in his passport. After some investigative work, they eventually
verified the man's identity.

Fan urged Shanghai residents who had undergone plastic surgery or whose
facial features had changed significantly to provide police with current
photographs to avoid confusion in places like immigration queues.

Insiders have said that it is trendy for young women to fly to South
Korea for plastic surgery.

One question that never starts fights

By Patrick Whiteley
Updated: 2007-01-24 10:23

Chi fan le ma (have you eaten?) is what many Chinese ask after saying ni
hao and is one of the most civilized and meaningful small-talk topics
ever developed. Opinions about food, no matter who you are, are always
interesting and they never start fights.

Money, religion and politics have long been taboo topics of conversation
in many circles of society because they are considered too personal and
often cause division. Boasting about your appreciating property value is
not appreciated by renters and pontificating about a particular political
viewpoint can polarize a party.

In 2007, money, religion and politics are probably the most talked about
subjects on the World Wide Web and are not ignored in China by a long
shot.

I'm often asked: "How much do you make?" and it halts me in my tracks. I
don't feel comfortable about sharing my gross monthly worth so I used to
make up a figure, which was high enough to be realistic for a foreigner.
My lie never worked.

My alleged salary was always dismissed with a "Bu shi (no way). You get
more than that!" I now shrug my shoulders and jokingly answer: "Never
enough."

This quip seems to be the universally accepted answer for all workers,
even the super rich like me, ha. US billionaire JD Rockefeller was once
asked how much was enough. His response: A little bit more.

Chinese often ask about my religion. My friend Qing Ma says all
foreigners are Christians, aren't they? In the West, when someone probes
about religion, it's often the lead-up to an ear bashing. The inquisitor
only wants to know my viewpoint on God, the universe and everything, so
they can tell me how I've got it wrong. What they don't understand is
their opinion about me is none of my business.

My Chinese friends who ask about spirituality really don't care what I
believe. They are just curious. According to them, everything is
everybody's business.

I tell them my philosophy. Love many, trust few and paddle your own canoe.

"But what's a canoe?" they ask.

Politics? Some people are Left wing and others are Right wing. I am more
of a chilli chicken wing guy myself, which leads me to my favorite
talking point. Have you eaten yet?

Food, glorious food. I love chewing the fat on this tasty topic. When I
first started working in a Chinese office, I really wanted to know what
everybody was talking about besides work. Last night's TV show? Juicy
gossip about Gong Li? Maybe Yao Ming's last NBL game? I later discovered
they were talking mostly about food. How long do you marinate an egg
plant? The correct salt measure for boiling rice? And have you eaten yet?

The expression chi fan le ma, is very easy to remember, if you use my
little trick. Remember that really catchy Seasame Street song Manamana?

The only words are ma na ma na du du de du-du. Replace ma na ma na with
chi fan le ma, and you'll always have something interesting in Chinese to
say. Chi fan le ma du du de du-du.

I'm going to pitch my song to the Olympic Games organizers. What a great
anthem for the opening ceremony, with Gong Li and Yao Ming leading the
parade!

On that note, I've got to go. My chilli chicken wings are getting cold.

Peking opera costume to lead the fashion

(chinanews.cn)
Updated: 2007-01-11 15:52

Make-up assistants help customers paint faces into a pink color like
peach blossoms in a photo studio in Shanghai Jan. 1, 2007. They will take
some pictures with their operatic images.

Peking Opera performance

Shanghai people, who always lead the fashion in China, try to celebrate
the forthcoming Chinese New Year in a unique way. Spending some 1,000
-2,000 yuan, many local people choose to go to a photo studio, dressed in
Peking Opera costumes, to have a picture taken of their operatic image.

Early in the morning, some customers came into a photo studio of the
Shanghai Peking Opera Troupe and began to take make-up under the guidance
of a professional make-up man. In about half an hour, the work was
finished. Women's faces were then painted into a pink color like peach
blossoms and men wore costumes that made them look handsome. A make-up
man in the studio told this reporter that it took them at least three
years to learn the skills of Peking Opera make-up, and even longer to
learn to paint the face.

Mr. Shao came into the studio early in the morning. He wanted to dress
like Lady Yang Yuhuan, a famous imperial concubine in the Tang Dynasty.
Although he had gained much weight in his middle age, he turned out to be
a beautiful woman with the help of the make-up man. His eyes became
larger and his face was drawn into an oval shape, meeting traditional
standards for a beautiful woman. He wore a phoenix coronet and an
embroidered ceremonial shawl. Under the guidance of a teacher, he even
learned to make "orchid fingers" and walk in quick short steps to
demonstrate the grace and elegance typical of an ancient Chinese woman.

When men wanted to act like women, some female customers also wanted to
dress like men. A woman, after dressing in the role of Mu Guiying, the
heroine in the famous Peking Opera "Mu Guiying Takes Command", wanted to
change her role into Xu Xian, the hero in the Peking Opera "Legend of the
White Snake." Although she knew nothing of the lyrics and words in these
operas, she wanted to act the role of the young male character and take a
picture as a gift for her friends.

In the bustling make-up room, the reporter saw some Japanese Peking opera
fans. The youngest Japanese girl who came to take pictures was only five
years old. Accompanied by her mother, she wanted to dress like the little
fairies in the Peking Opera "The Goddess of Heaven Scatters
Flowers."Japanese man came to Shanghai from Hokkaido in Japan. He would
dress like Wang Zhaojun, a beautiful princess who married an ethnic
minority leader in the Han Dynasty.

In Japan, many people are Chinese Peking opera fans. When the Shanghai
Peking Opera Troupe went to Japan to give performance, lots of Japanese
people traveled a long way to see the performance. Whenever the Chinese
New Year was coming, some Japanese opera fans would visit Shanghai to see
Peking operas and some would like to take some pictures with their
operatic images, said Yan Qinggu, a renowned Peking Opera actor.

So far, about 100 people from the United States, Germany, and other
countries have visited the photo studio of the Shanghai Peking Opera
Troupe for taking pictures.

Office people enjoy attending interest parties

(Chinanews.cn)
Updated: 2006-12-31 09:29

Shanghai office people are tired of shifting from one party to another
that focus on making friends with some boring party games. Some 1,000
office people in Shanghai's Pudong Zhang Jiang Hi-Tech Development Zone
recently proposed a new idea for parties. Instead of focusing on making
friends, people attending these parties should come to share their same
interest. A youth forum was established in the Zhang Jiang Hi-Tech
Development Zone on Tuesday and the first interest party attracted some
160 white collars to come, the Shanghai Youth Daily reported.

that focus on making friends with some boring party games.

Most of the white collars coming to the party work in the development
zone. After calling a day, people come to the party by twos and threes.

Most of the young people attending the party here work in the same field
and they are actually in the same age group. However, we usually have few
chances to talk with each other face to face, not to say attending
parties, said Mr. Xi, who decided to attend the party once when he
learned of the news. He told our reporter that he had attended some other
parties before, and most of the parties were actually matchmaking
gatherings which made him feel uncomfortable. This party, however,
attracted people sharing the same interest, therefore it might bring more
fun to the participants.

Most people attending the party were divided into different groups based
on their interest. Some 10 white collars joined a film dubbing group.
Here dubbing fans were further divided into small groups, with a man and
a woman forming a pair. Each pair dubbed for the film, The Promise.
Sometimes audiences would be amused by the performance and at other
times, they applauded the pairs perfect coordination.

The party lasted for nearly three hours and some people still felt
excited about it when it ended. One of the participants Ms. Zhou told the
reporter that the party was indeed very interesting. People could chat
with each other more naturally here since they all had the same interest.
This was the first time for her to attend a party like this.

Sociologist Yu Hai from Fudan University expressed his approval for the
party. Although the interest party is, in fact, another form of social
gathering, he said, young people would feel more comfortable with this
kind of social activities. And it might perhaps help them find their
ideal lover more quickly than other kinds of parties, he said.

Chinese Class - "Solo couples" enjoy freedom

CITYLIFE / Hip & New

"Solo couples" enjoy freedom

(chinanews.cn)
Updated: 2006-12-04 13:56

Lingling works in a joint-venture enterprise in Chongqing. Every weekend
she refuses the invitations from her friends, and spends those two off
days with her boyfriend. In fact, they have been dating like this for
over a year.

Lingling and her boyfriend are no exceptions in Chongqing. Young people
like them usually call themselves "solo couples", and they describe their
life as "5+2", because the two of them each goes their own way on
weekdays, but get together on weekends. "'I love you' doesn't necessarily
mean I have to be always with you" is their love motto.

"Such life makes love and freedom compatible with each other, thus it's
the best choice,"said Lingling.

Lin and his wife, who just got married, belong to "solo couples", too.
They live in the same apartment, but in separate bedrooms. "We are
friends on weekdays, and couples on weekends,"said Lin. His wife and he
really enjoy their current life.

"Solo couples'" way of life actually reflects their respect for freedom
and individuality, although the pressure of life is partly a reason, too.
Most of the solo couplesare in their 30s, and most of them live a
well-off life.

To some extent, "solo couples" can avoid certain problems ensuing from
traditional marriage, particularly in the fast-paced modern life.

Learn Chinese - Matches for aspiring cinderellas?

CITYLIFE / Hip & New

Matches for aspiring cinderellas?

(aaa)
Updated: 2006-11-14 10:23

Cinderella needs more than a pair of glass slippers to net her prince,
said a south China company, which offers to prepare women for matches to
rich bachelors.

Shenzhen-based Zuanyuan (or diamond affinity) Information Co opened a
so-called "diamond lady class" last month, offering 10 courses including
image building and household management, the Nanfang Daily reported.

The objective is to "permit the ladies to meet rich bachelors'
requirements for a wife," said company General Manager Wu Jintao.

"Many young girls dream about marrying rich men so that they can enjoy a
better social and economic life, while on the other hand, unmarried rich
men find it hard to find someone who meets their criteria for a perfect
wife," Wu said.

The company also provides matchmaking services for rich bachelors,
charging from 60,000 yuan (US$7,500) to one million yuan, saying it's in
touch with China's richest men.

The "diamond lady class" costs each potential Cinderella 20,000 yuan to
50,000 yuan and promises to later introduce them to single rich men.

Critics from the Nanfang Daily called for people to get rich themselves
instead of becoming "a rich man's accessory" through marriage.

Office workers can spend lunch reading

(Shanghai Daily )
Updated: 2006-11-01 09:54

Office workers in Xujiahui's Metro Tower in Shanghai will be able to
spend their lunch breaks browsing for books at a library that opened in
their building on October 31.

The book room is the first branch the Shanghai Library has set up in an
office building, according to Shanghai Huimei Property Company, which
manages the tower.

The property company and the Shanghai Library paid about 40,000 yuan
(US$5,000) to set up the book room, which is only open to the
approximately 3,000 people working in the tower.

About 100 office workers visited the 80-square-meter library yesterday
and 20 or so applied for library cards.

Thanks to a linked network, the card owners can also borrow from and
return books to public libraries throughout the city.

Currently, the library is only open for four hours a week, from noon to
2pm every Tuesday and Friday.

"Changes to the schedule and regulations are likely to be made in a few
days when we get feedback following the trial operation," Helen Wu, an
official with the property company, said yesterday.

Wu said the library currently houses a collection of 2,000 books, and
plans to add about 300 new books every two months. She said it will try
to stock more English-language books and magazines for the well-educated
white-collar workers in the building.

"I used to go to a bookstore in the opposite building to spend my
one-hour break at noon. I will come here from now on, so it is quite
convenient," said Hans Chen, a purchasing agent in the building.

"But I am worried it will be very crowded in the future as there is a
staff of 3,000 in the building."

Not to be outdone by boyfriend Vince Vaughn's appearance in London's 24
Hour Plays two weeks ago, Jennifer Aniston made her Broadway debut on
Monday night for New York's own 24 Hour Plays charity gala.

The 6th Annual 24 Hour Plays on Broadway benefit featured six 10-minute
plays, conceived, written, rehearsed and performed by an array of top US
actors within 24 hours.

Aniston made her first Broadway appearance in the play Three Girls And
Bob, playing a single woman who attends an intimacy workshop with two
friends, played by Rosie Perez and Lynn Whitfield, before trying out her
new tactics on a hapless suitor, played by David Cross.
