Office workers can spend lunch reading

Office workers in Xujiahui's Metro Tower in Shanghai will be able to
spend their lunch breaks browsing for books at a library that opened in
their building on October 31.

The book room is the first branch the Shanghai Library has set up in an
office building, according to Shanghai Huimei Property Company, which
manages the tower.

The property company and the Shanghai Library paid about 40,000 yuan
(US$5,000) to set up the book room, which is only open to the
approximately 3,000 people working in the tower.

About 100 office workers visited the 80-square-meter library yesterday
and 20 or so applied for library cards.

Thanks to a linked network, the card owners can also borrow from and
return books to public libraries throughout the city.

Currently, the library is only open for four hours a week, from noon to
2pm every Tuesday and Friday.

"Changes to the schedule and regulations are likely to be made in a few
days when we get feedback following the trial operation," Helen Wu, an
official with the property company, said yesterday.

Wu said the library currently houses a collection of 2,000 books, and
plans to add about 300 new books every two months. She said it will try
to stock more English-language books and magazines for the well-educated
white-collar workers in the building.

"I used to go to a bookstore in the opposite building to spend my
one-hour break at noon. I will come here from now on, so it is quite
convenient," said Hans Chen, a purchasing agent in the building.

"But I am worried it will be very crowded in the future as there is a
staff of 3,000 in the building."
